A friend's mom used the following response when her kids asked her for permission to do something out-of-the-ordinary, "If you push me now, the answer is no. If you let me think about your request the answer is maybe yes."
We have a similar rule. If we are in a store and my son asks me for something more than once, he will absolutely not get it, ever. If he politely asks or hints at it once, he may get it.

When I was a little girl, sometimes my mom would answer my requests with a simple "maybe". To which I would always ask, "Maybe yes? or Maybe no?" ;)
Maybe yes is sometimes the best phrase a little girl can hear!
