Jones' distinctive voice to be lauded
James Earl Jones, who has voiced some of entertainment's most memorable characters, will receive the 2008 Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award.
SAG President Alan Rosenberg called Jones "a vocal presence without peer" and lauded his TV, film and stage work.
"His long and quiet devotion to advancing literacy, the arts and humanities on a national and local scale deserves our appreciation," Rosenberg said Thursday.
Jones, who said he was mute as a child because of a stuttering problem, credits reading with helping him find his voice.
"Through a love of reading, I was able to overcome my muteness and pursue a career in which my voice would be my most prominent asset," the 77-year-old actor said.
I would not have equated a love of books with excellent elocution, but if it worked for Darth Vader, who knows what it might do for you and your children?

Just wanted to say...
Thanks for telling me the beginning of the Sonlight story on Amy's Beam! :)
God just has the most wonderful hands... and weaves the best stories of all, doesn't he?
My husband and I started out in government subsidized housing-- and were on food stamps and the medical card. He worked 2 full time minimum wage jobs (1 overnight, one during the day)-- I worked 1 full time job for a book publisher, a part time job at a Christian bookstore, went to college full time at night, and was pregnant with our first son. 10 years and 5 kids later-- we both have our 4 year degrees with honors, John works for a Christian programming company as a coder. Most of their profits are donated to a hospital building project in Ghana. And I've anchored news in Chicago and now am an anchor and personality for Christian radio network in 2 states.
God is good! And though that part of our life was tough-- we made it through because He had our back.
Thanks for sharing your story, and your sweat and tears. It meant a lot to me.

Encouraging post...thank you! One of our sons has been in speech therapy for several years, and has a way to go. Some have a hunch that Moses also had speech difficulties. It is very encouraging that a "love of reading" helped James Earl Jones. I forwarded the Denver article to our speech therapist.
